Crunch - Ultimate Frisbee Amsterdam
So how did the Windmill Windup get to where we are now? Like every good idea it all started with a question: "how can we organise a fun event that is still attracts the best teams from all over Europe to come to play in Amsterdam".
On a cold, rainy day in June, the inaugural Windmill Windup kicked off with 24 teams in the open division and 8 teams forming the womens division. Instead of playing in pools or a knock-out system the Windmill started a tradition making use of the revolutionary Swiss Draw Format. This way teams are pitted against opponents of similar strength, resulting in tough, competitive and hard-fought games.
After three days of hard ultimate Primavera Olandese and Ragnarok clinched the titles of their respective divisions. The first Windmill Windup had succesfully come to an end, and plans for the second edition were allready in the making.
In the years that followed, we worked hard to improve in all areas. Windmill is renowned for the fun-factor and we do our best to keep it that way. In past years we have had our share of jumping castles, dunk tanks, water slides en obstacle courses to provide entertainment in between or after the games. Other Windmill classics: yoga sessions on sunday morning, the infamous mingle-mingle, frisbee speed-dating, the pub quiz and the dutchy delight beer race.
Fun is also to be had at the Friday and especially Saturday night parties. Games are long and hard at the Windmill but that doesn't keep us and the windmill players from making the most of our nocturnal festivities. Our house DJ's have been funking the place up for years, as well as party bands like the funk boys of BombLB (2007, 2009).
Of course the Windmill Windup is all about ultimate frisbee. And we are proud that not only has the number of teams increased over the years but also the quality of teams. Most of the top teams from last years European Club Championships will visit the Windmill this year, in preperation for World Ultimate Club Championships in Prague.
